HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a silent killer responsible for the development of as many as six types of cancer. Its most well-known link is cervical cancer, but that is not the only problem. In addition to reproductive organ cancers, the virus can also lead to throat cancer and other head and neck cancers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Poland, a universal program of free HPV vaccinations is being implemented for children who are 9 but not yet 14 years old. It is dedicated to girls and boys, because the virus affects both sexes and its effects can be tragic. We vaccinate boys not only so that they do not infect others, but also so that they do not get sick themselves."<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Why should children be vaccinated early? Adolescents' immune systems respond best to vaccination, providing more effective and lasting protection. Additionally, vaccination before sexual activity eliminates the risk of contact with the virus. It is worth noting that two doses of the vaccine are sufficient for children up to 14 years of age, while older children need three doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the greatest dangers associated with HPV is that infections with the most dangerous, highly oncogenic types of the virus are asymptomatic. An infected person may be unaware of the infection for years, while precancerous changes or cancer develop in their body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That is why specialists recommend HPV tests, which, in combination with liquid cytology, provide the highest diagnostic sensitivity. Regular tests allow you to detect the infection at an early stage and prevent the development of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although the vaccination program focuses on children and adolescents, any adult can also get vaccinated. The HPV vaccine also works in people who have already been exposed to the virus, reducing the risk of developing cancer or recurring precancerous conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Homola, a gynecologist and specialist in the treatment of HPV-dependent diseases, speaks about it openly: "I myself got vaccinated as an adult, at the age of 34. Vaccination reduces the risk of recurrence of HPV-related diseases by 80%, especially in women who have undergone treatment for cervical precancer. Any adult can make this decision and gain lifelong protection."<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The HPV virus is a real threat, but we can prevent it with vaccinations.
