Posture defects in children are an increasingly common problem that can lead to serious health consequences in the future. Fortunately, early detection and appropriate correction of spinal curvatures give a good chance of full recovery. In this guide, based on a series of podcasts with physiotherapist Jarosław Bagiński, head of the NZOZ Your Doctor Rehabilitation Studio, you will learn how to recognize the first signs of posture defects and what you can do to ensure the healthy development of your child.

OBSERVE THE CHILD'S POSTURE

The first step to preventing posture problems is to detect them early. Pay attention to the symmetry of your child's body. Are their shoulders at the same level? Is their back straight? Does the child shorten their stride? Also, pay attention to how the child sits - does he or she lean too much forward or to the side?

MOVEMENT IS HEALTH – ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

A sedentary lifestyle, especially during school, contributes to posture defects. Children spend hours sitting at desks, often adopting an incorrect body position. It is worth remembering that fidgeting and changing position while sitting are a natural need of a child. This should not be corrected, because the child is looking for a comfortable and healthy position in this way.

MAKE SURE YOUR MUSCLE TENSION IS CORRECT

A healthy spine is not only about strong back muscles, but also abdominal muscles. Abdominal muscles, especially transverse abdominal muscles, play a key role in stabilizing the spine. Exercises that strengthen these muscles help maintain proper posture. It is worth introducing exercises that strengthen both back and abdominal muscles into your daily activities.

DO NOT IGNORE THE SYMPTOMS – CONSULT A SPECIALIST

If you notice any signs of posture problems in your child, such as body asymmetry, stooping or problems walking, consult a physiotherapist or orthopedist. In some cases, the curvature may be caused by, for example, a difference in the length of the lower limbs, which also requires consultation with a specialist. Remember to take steps with caution and always consult a doctor before deciding on treatment.

ENCOURAGE CORRECTIVE EXERCISES

Regular corrective exercises, such as exercises on a ball or on a corrective disc, can help correct posture defects. These types of activities force the spine to work and help maintain proper posture. In the case of children with greater posture defects, it is worth consulting an exercise plan with a physiotherapist, who will select the appropriate set of exercises.

EARLY INTERVENTION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Early detection and corrective therapy is key to effective treatment of posture defects. Studies indicate that appropriate therapy, started at an early stage, can be effective in even 70-90% cases. Regular exercises and close cooperation with a physiotherapist allow you to avoid more invasive forms of treatment, such as wearing a corset or surgery.

Taking care of a child's correct posture requires constant attention and commitment from both the parents and the child. Regular physical activity, appropriate exercises and awareness of correct posture are key elements in preventing and correcting posture defects.
