CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS

Congenital heart defects are structural abnormalities of the heart or major vessels that are present at birth. They can significantly affect blood flow. Symptoms suggesting congenital heart defects include rapid fatigue, breathing problems, delayed growth, or sudden episodes of turning blue.

CARDIOMYOPATHY

Cardiomyopathies are a group of heart muscle diseases that can lead to heart failure. In children, symptoms can be subtle or dramatic, including fatigue, difficulty breathing, leg and abdominal swelling, and fainting.

HEART RHYTHM DISORDERS

Heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias) can present as very rapid or irregular heartbeats. They are often undetected in children but can lead to sudden collapse, dizziness, fainting or a feeling of a pounding heart.

ACQUIRED HEART DISEASES

Acquired heart disease, such as myocarditis or pericarditis, can be caused by infections or autoimmune reactions. Symptoms can be similar to those of cardiomyopathy and include fever, fatigue, joint pain, and difficulty breathing.

SYMPTOMS THAT SHOULD CONCERN PARENTS:

  • Breathing difficulties: Especially if they occur for no apparent reason, such as while feeding or resting.
  • Getting tired quickly: If your baby gets tired quickly while playing or feeding, it could be a sign of a heart problem.
  • A bluish tint to the skin, lips or nails may indicate insufficient blood oxygenation.
  • Fainting or dizziness: These may be signs of an abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Delayed growth or weight gain: May indicate heart failure.
  • If you notice any of the above symptoms in your child, do not delay visiting a specialist.
  • Remember that your child's heart health is precious and requires care and attention.
