Year after year, more and more Poles set off in search of the sun in the winter. Many tourists choose exotic destinations, often unaware of the health hazards that may lurk there.
WHAT TO PACK IN A TRAVEL FIRST AID KIT?
A travel first aid kit is a must-have for exotic trips. It should contain disinfectants, plasters, an elastic bandage, as well as painkillers, antipyretics, and diarrhea medications. People with chronic diseases must take a supply of medications for a few more days, in case of delays in travel. As Dr. Mateusz Babicki emphasizes: "The first aid kit should be adapted to the place we are going to. We prepare differently for a stay in an all-inclusive hotel, and differently for exploring the jungle or regions with a lower sanitary standard." It is also worth considering repellents with DEET, which will protect against mosquitoes carrying tropical diseases. When traveling with children, consider safe protective measures, such as stickers with essential oils or light mosquito nets. Remember that in many countries the regulations regarding medications may differ from those in Poland - check them before leaving.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN IN THE TROPICS?
The intense UV radiation in the tropics requires special protection. Apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, preferably waterproof, and reapply every two hours. After a day in the sun, your skin needs to regenerate – take a moisturiser that will soothe irritation and prevent dryness. Also, prepare for high temperatures – remember to hydrate properly and avoid long exposure to the sun during peak hours.
HOW EARLY TO START MEDICAL PREPARATIONS?
It is best to start planning the health aspects of your trip at least 6–8 weeks before departure. This time will allow for a consultation with a travel medicine doctor and the recommended vaccinations, such as against yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid. As Dr. Mateusz Babicki explains: “Some vaccinations, such as against dengue, require several months to achieve full immunity. Therefore, it is worth starting health preparations as early as possible.” If you are planning a trip at the last minute, do not delay your visit to a specialist – many vaccinations and preparations can also be implemented in an accelerated mode.
WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE NECESSARY BEFORE EXOTIC TRAVEL?
The choice of vaccinations depends on the region, the nature of the trip and individual health. Basic vaccinations, such as hepatitis A and B, are recommended for almost all travelers. For those traveling to tropical regions, vaccinations against yellow fever, typhoid fever or Japanese encephalitis may be necessary. If you plan to spend time in rural areas, especially in Asia or Africa, it is worth considering malaria prophylaxis. Always check the health requirements of the destination country, as some vaccinations are required to obtain a visa.
HOW TO AVOID DISEASE IN THE TROPICS?
Avoiding water from unsafe sources and food prepared in unhygienic conditions is key. It is worth taking probiotics to help alleviate the effects of possible traveler's diarrhea. Protection against insects, especially mosquitoes, includes using repellents, wearing long clothing in the evenings and using mosquito nets. Remember to stay hydrated and avoid overexertion in extreme heat.
