Winter is a time of particularly frequent infections in children. Increased temperature, runny nose, cough or lack of appetite - these are symptoms that can worry every parent. What to do to relieve your child before seeking medical advice? Here is a guide to help you deal with winter infections.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE AN INFECTION IN A CHILD?
Infections in children most often affect the upper respiratory tract and are caused by viruses. Symptoms may include:
- Runny nose (discharge may also drip down the back of the throat).
- Cough, especially worse at night.
- Increased body temperature and in some cases fever (above 38 degrees)
- Loss of appetite and grogginess.
WHEN SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED?
Symptoms that require urgent medical consultation include:
- Fever lasting more than 3 days.
- Skin changes: spots, spots, lumps, blisters.
- Sudden deterioration in a child's health after initial improvement.
FEVER IN A CHILD – HOW TO REACT?
Fever is a natural defense mechanism of the body. We talk about it when the body temperature is above 38°C. The most important rule of action is the quick use of over-the-counter antipyretics. They should be administered in the appropriate dose, depending on the child's weight. Remember to provide your child with plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration! You can also implement home supportive methods – cool compresses or a lukewarm bath as a complement to treatment.
HOW TO PREVENT INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN?
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Avoiding contact with sick people.
- Proper diet and hydration.
- Maintaining the proper temperature and humidity in your home.
- Physical activity in the fresh air, even in winter.
Most winter infections in children are mild and usually go away on their own. It is important to monitor your child and respond to any worrying symptoms. If you have any concerns, it is always worth consulting a doctor to make sure your child is being treated properly.
