The holiday season is starting, a time of long-awaited rest, trips and contact with nature. Often, in the rush of preparations, we focus on packing our bags and planning attractions, forgetting about the basic issue of health. Meanwhile, the summer season brings with it not only joy, but also a number of potential threats: sunburn, insect bites, injuries or contact with wild animals. Based on conversations with specialists in podcasts WHAT DOES YOUR DOCTOR SAY? We have prepared a practical guide that will help you stay safe during your holiday trips.
SUMMER WITHOUT BURNS. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN?
Summer vacations are often associated with sunbathing, but excessive exposure to the sun can lead to painful burns and, over time, to serious skin conditions. Experts emphasize that the most effective protection is to use creams with a high UV filter, avoid the sun at peak hours, and moisturize the skin properly after sunbathing. In the event of a burn, cool the skin as soon as possible with lukewarm water and apply gentle soothing agents. It is better to forget about old "home remedies" such as egg white or buttermilk. They can only worsen the skin condition!
WARNING TICKS! INVISIBLE THREAT IN THE GRASS
Ticks are small arachnids with a high potential for causing harm. Their bites can lead to Lyme disease or other tick-borne diseases. Therefore, when walking in the forest or meadows, it is worth wearing clothes that cover the body, preferably in light colors. After each stay in the field, carefully inspect the skin - especially the groin, armpits, knee bends. If a tick is found, remove it with tweezers, grasping it as close to the skin as possible. If a characteristic erythema appears within a few days, you should see a doctor immediately.
WASPS, BEES AND ALLERGIES. WHAT TO FEEL AFRAID OF AND HOW TO PREPARE?
The summer season is a time of increased insect activity. Most stings end with temporary pain and redness, but for people with allergies, it can mean a serious threat to life. An anaphylactic reaction develops quickly and requires immediate intervention. Dr. Adam Kuźmiński recommends that people with diagnosed allergies always carry adrenaline in a special applicator. You don't need to have medical experience - the device is easy to use and can save lives. Each sting should also be disinfected and observed. A quick reaction is essential!
VIPERS ON THE TRAIL. ARE THEY REALLY DANGEROUS?
While walking along mountain trails, you may come across a European adder. It is not aggressive and usually attacks only in self-defense. However, if you are bitten, you must act wisely. Do not suck out the venom, cut the wound or apply a tourniquet. The most important thing is to immobilize the limb, ensure calm and call for help immediately. Particular caution should be exercised when biting children and the elderly. Bites in the face and neck area are dangerous. In such situations, quick hospitalization can prevent serious consequences.
HOLIDAY INJURIES. WHAT IS IT WORTH KNOWING ABOUT FIRST AID?
Outdoor fun, cycling, hiking in the forest – all of these are conducive to holiday injuries. In the case of injuries, the ABC rule is the basis – airway patency, breathing, circulation. If a cut occurs, the wound should be washed – even with soap and water – and then disinfected and dressed with a sterile dressing. In the case of larger bleedings, pressure and quick contact with a doctor are necessary. In the case of sprains or suspected broken limbs – immobilization, cooling and a visit to the ER. In the mountains, a cold stream comes in handy. This is the best natural cryotherapy!
EXOTIC DESTINATIONS. PREPARE BEFORE YOU GO
Travel to tropical countries is becoming increasingly popular, but requires preparation. Before leaving, it is worth seeking medical advice and getting vaccinated according to WHO recommendations. Doctors warn that contact with wild animals, even as part of tourist attractions, can be very dangerous. Bites, stings and burns from exotic plants or jellyfish require the knowledge of local medical personnel. Therefore, it is best to avoid risky situations and, instead of acting alone, trust local doctors.
HOLIDAY FIRST AID KIT. YOUR TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
Every vacation should start with a well-packed first aid kit. What should you put in it? Plasters, gauze, bandages, disinfectants, painkillers and antipyretics, anti-allergic preparations, insect repellents and creams with UV filter. People with chronic diseases should take a supply of medicines, and allergy sufferers – an adrenaline pen. A thermometer, scissors and a few sterile compresses will also come in handy. A well-prepared first aid kit can prevent many unpleasant situations and save your vacation along with your health.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY
The rule is simple: prevention is better than cure. Proper preparation, awareness of the risks and a calm reaction in a crisis situation can help avoid many problems. Vacations are supposed to be a time of joy, not stress and visits to the ER. Therefore, before leaving, pack not only a swimsuit and a map, but also knowledge that will help you stay healthy.
