May Day outdoors without panic. What's worth knowing about ticks and tick-borne diseases?
April 27, 2026
The May long weekend is a time for outdoor relaxation, but it's also a time when the topic of ticks returns with renewed force. It's worth remembering that ticks aren't limited to forests. They're increasingly appearing in city parks, allotments, and even neighborhood lawns. To address the threat realistically, without unnecessary fear, we've prepared a guide based on a series of interviews with an infectious disease specialist., Dr. Ewa Jarowicz in a medical podcast WHAT DOES YOUR DOCTOR SAY?.
Not every prick means illness
The natural reaction after finding a tick is anxiety. However, it's important to remember that a bite alone doesn't necessarily mean infection. The most common mistake is acting on emotions and relying on random information from the internet. The key is to remain calm, observe, and make decisions based on symptoms, not the mere fact of contact with a tick.
The most important thing to do when you get home
The basis of prevention is a thorough body inspection after returning from green areas. If you spot a tick, remove it as soon as possible. Time is of the essence, because quick removal reduces the risk of transmitting pathogens. No specialized tools are needed; the most important thing is efficient operation and subsequent disinfection of the puncture site.
Observation instead of hasty research
After removing the tick, the most important thing is to carefully but calmly observe your body. There's no need for tests or to see a doctor if you don't have any symptoms. In the following weeks, it's worth paying attention to skin changes and your well-being. A characteristic symptom of Lyme disease may be erythema migrans, which does not hurt or itch, so it is often noticed by chance.
It's not just Lyme disease
Although Lyme disease is the most frequently detected tick-borne disease, it is not the only disease transmitted by these arachnids. Ticks can also transmit other pathogens, including the viruses responsible for tick-borne encephalitis. In this case, the course of the disease can be more complex and may develop in stages, initially resembling a common cold and only later developing more serious symptoms.
Peace of mind, knowledge and trust in the doctor
The most important message before the May long weekend is to maintain a balance between vigilance and calm. A conscious approach, monitoring your body, and trusting your doctor's recommendations will help you avoid both unnecessary panic and poor health decisions. Want to know more?
